Cities 5.0: Harnessing AI, Continuum and Virtual Twins for the Future of Urban Living

City 5.0 represents a vision of urban living in which technology is harnessed for efficiency and innovation. It is designed to be an inclusive, sustainable, and resilient environment, fostering community engagement, inclusivity, and equity while leveraging cutting-edge technology to improve quality of life and ensure long-term urban sustainability.

As City 5.0 is an evolving concept, it may continue to change and adapt as new technologies and social priorities emerge. While "City 5.0" is still an emerging idea without a single, widely accepted definition, the core goal will always remain: to create smart, human-centred, inclusive, environmentally responsible cities and a sustainable urban future.

We will explore opportunities and challenges in this event, including a human-centric approach, policy, regulatory, standardisation, practical implementation and environmental aspects.

Event Themes

Collaboration and Standardisation

In today's fast-paced, interconnected world, effective collaboration and standardized practices are key to driving innovation and ensuring seamless integration across industries. This session will explore the importance of cross-sector collaboration and the role of standardization in creating efficient, scalable, and sustainable solutions. Attendees will gain insights into successful collaboration frameworks, the challenges of maintaining standards amidst rapid technological advancements, and strategies for balancing flexibility with consistency. Join us for a dynamic discussion on how collaboration and standardization can foster growth, reduce costs, and enhance global interoperability.

Green Enablement

As sustainability becomes a global priority, Green ICT is emerging as a pivotal enabler of environmental responsibility. This session will focus on how the integration of energy-efficient technologies, renewable energy solutions, and sustainable practices with the ICT can help reduce carbon footprints and promote eco-friendly innovation. Attendees will explore cutting-edge Green ICT strategies, models, methodologies, and discuss the role of ICT in supporting broader sustainability goals. Join us to learn how businesses and organizations can leverage Green ICT to create value while contributing to a more sustainable future.

Cities 5.0

Explore the transformative vision of Cities 5.0—an evolution toward intelligent, sustainable, and people-centric urban environments. This session will dive into cutting-edge technologies, data-driven governance, and inclusive design strategies shaping the future of smart cities. Join industry leaders and urban planners as they discuss innovations that prioritize community well-being, environmental resilience, and digital integration to create thriving urban ecosystems. Learn how forward-thinking initiatives can redefine living, working, and mobility in the cities of tomorrow.

AI, Virtual Twins and Verses

Virtual twins and virtual verses are revolutionizing how we design, interact with, and optimize both physical and digital environments. This session will delve into the cutting-edge concepts of virtual twins—digital replicas of physical assets or systems—and virtual verses, immersive digital spaces that extend the possibilities of human interaction and collaboration and explore how these technologies are transforming industries such as manufacturing, urban planning, and entertainment, driving efficiencies, innovation, and new experiences.

Event Programme

Thematic Sessions

IoT-Edge-6G Collaboration and Perspectivess

The aim is to bring together the main 6G initiatives in Europe and to discuss interaction with AIOTI, the different perspectives, in particular concerning a 6G flexible Edge-Cloud continuum. What are the key research topics that are relevant to EU to strengthen the Telco-Cloud view? How to best work together technological enablers such as AI, Edge computing, etc? Which actions should be taken towards standardisation? How to boost cross-domain and cross-layering cooperation?

Standardisation leveraging the hour glass approach

The hourglass approach in standardization is a widely used framework, especially in technology and communications systems, to promote interoperability and scalability. It has proven to be highly effective in creating resilient, adaptable, and interoperable systems, especially in areas where long-term scalability and compatibility are critical. The session will discuss on how it can be leveraged in the context of the EU funded projects and EU policies related to infrastructure.

Leveraging GHG emission assessment measurements in ICT enabled use cases

This session will discuss use cases that embed ICT solutions to enable GHG reduction of emissions and emphasize the importance of GHG emission assessment measurements based on international standards. In particular, this session will focus on examples of such GHG emission assessment measurements applied in use cases that embed ICT solutions to enable GHG reduction of emissions.

Advancing Net Zero targets with AI driven edge systems

NZIA aims to boost EU competitiveness in clean technologies while addressing interconnected challenges of digitalisation, sustainability, and resilience. Digitalisation in energy through digital enablement and new tools and technologies applications such as AI at the edge are creating an interconnected approach to achieve sustainability, competitiveness, and resilience in the EU's transition towards competitive manufacturing and net zero goals.

Cities 5.0 A Human Adaptive City – Forward to an open and interoperable cities

The comprehensive incorporation of the Internet of Things (IoT) has been identified as a key enabler for data-driven management, providing the city with a reliable digital twin that can support both operational reliability and strategic planning. In this session, we will explore how the adoption of these technologies in collaboration between municipalities, academia and businesses can lead to confluence of various approaches for innovation to culminate-in effective and efficient use of IoT in cities.

EU regulation impact on healthcare services in a smart city context

The goal of this session would be to analyse the impact of the EU regulation (GDPR, AI act, U Data space, etc.) on socio-healthcare services design and full deployment and to broaden the perspective towards another domainin really relevant to a smart city environment such as "Automomous Driving and car regulations" state of the art and vision for the future. An insight on opportunities and challenges as well as barriers and facilitators will be provided according to different stakeholders' standpoints.

Resource Efficient Convergence of AI, GenAI and Immersive Technologies at the Edge

The session explores advancements from the convergence at the edge of AI, GenAI and immersive technologies, including VR, MR, ER and AR, with concepts like the metaverse, omniverse, and Web 4.0. The session will focus on innovative design techniques and architectural frameworks prioritising resource optimisation, energy efficiency, and sustainability by exploring cutting-edge strategies for implementing learning and inference techniques that reduce resource utilisation and carbon footprints and enhance the sustainability of applications across various sectors.
