HIGHLIGHTS
AIOTI Signature Event 2022 IoT and Edge Computing: Societal Impact and Opportunities for the Green Digital Twin Transition
AIOTI successfully held its second physical Signature event on 27 September. The participants followed the keynote, three sessions and two presentations with renowned representatives from the policy and business domain.
Keynote session with speakers from Siemens and Vodafone were introducing initiatives in the area of digital transformation and link to IoT and Edge Computing, how they can contribute to achieve the overall European objectives.
The first session on IoT and crisis preparedness moderated by Ricardo Vitorino from Ubiwhere, presented a vision paper AIOTI has developed. The main objective of this vision paper is to identify the steps to be followed to develop societal resilience towards short-term and long-term risks. The aim is to showcase the best practices and insights needed to sense, respond, defend and recover within the IoT domain by involving all key stakeholders.
The second session moderated on IoT improving Healthy Urban Living by Celine Prins from the Institute for Future of Living, presented a report developed in collaboration of Urban Society, Buildings, Innovation Ecosystems, Energy and Health communities covering topics of improving healthy urban lifestyle, value-based healthcare and mitigating the risk and social impact of isolation and loneliness in urban societies.
The third session on Built Environment Powering the Future moderated by Erik van Wijk from ValueFactory, explore how can we unlock the promise of technologies and really initiate a transformation in our living and working space, ensuring a thriving future for us and generations to come and how can we bridge the gap of exponential tech development and the acceptance by the public at scale, because we are electrifying massively, need to build local resilience, the future is a decentralized power infrastructure. IoT, AI, edge architecture and blockchain solutions are entering these domains and there are growing investments made available for a variety of start-ups in these fields.
The first presentation on AIOTI Testbeds Methodology and Catalogue moderated by Rute Sofia from fortiss presented “AIOTI Testbed Catalogue” developed at the end of 2021 within its Testbeds Group. The report comprises a set of testbed descriptions based on a specific format and has as aim to contribute to a coordinated view on testbeds derived from content provided by AIOTI partners; the use-cases being developed; the European competitiveness domains being addressed; global perspective on the interest of partners in terms of testbeds. In parallel with the AIOTI Testbed Catalogue, the Testbeds Group also developed AIOTI Testbeds Methodology report. The session will present both reports as a dissemination tool and assist in the development of use-case demonstrations and new testbed development.
The second presentation on IoT and Edge computing standardisation: Impact and Opportunities moderated by Georgios Karagiannis from Huawei showed how standardisation and AIOTI activities in that area contribute to the topics covered by the three sessions (IoT and Crisis Preparedness, IoT improving Healthy Urban Lifestyle and Built Environment Powering the Future). Discussion between the panellists of the three sessions and the AIOTI Standardisation Group will show the challenges and opportunities that IoT and Edge computing standardization has on Twin (Green and Digital) transition, supporting crisis preparedness, contributing to disease prevention and improving the built environment.
During the event, six AIOTI members (Intracom Telecom, Verses Global, DLT Group, Ubiwhere, University of Galway and Keysight Technologies)presented their testbeds and demo’s in the exhibition area.
Special thanks to our Diamond Sponsors Siemens and Vodafone and Management Board member Tanya Suarez for moderating and leading us through the event.
Presentations can be found on the event website.

DIH4CPS Invitation to Digital Transformation Summit
DIH4CPS invites you to participate in the international Digital Transformation Summit 2022 (https://summit.digit-madeira.pt/). UNINOVA together with the Regional Government of Madeira, are organising the summit which will take place in October 24th – 27th 2022, in Funchal, Madeira.
The European Commission in its vision for Europe’s Digital Transformation by 2030, proposes the Digital Compass for the EU’s digital decade that revolves around four cardinal points: Government, Infrastructures, Skills and Business. The successful orchestration of the digital compass is the key to successful digital transformation.
The Digital Transformation Summit 2022 responds to this challenge in a forum where the EU’s digital strategy is debated, tackling a digital economy, research and innovation cooperation mechanism to achieve the visionary common objectives at European and regional levels. Technical solutions, skills, businesses and societal aspects will be presented and discussed in order to support entrepreneurial discovery processes, cooperation between academia and industry and smart specialisation. Bringing together recognised individualities from the European Commission, Government, Academia and Industry, the Summit sets the scene for a human-centric vision in a digital society. Needs, expectations, developments and innovative solutions will be discussed aiming at digitally empowering citizens and businesses to improve, grow, innovate and compete on fair terms, while achieving climate neutrality.
Digital Transformation Summit 2022 is organised around the compass and covering a wide range of digital transformation areas including Digital Health and Health data, Manufacturing, Maritime, Smart Cities and Energy, Tourism and Culture, as well as the full set of digital services being created and offered via the network of European Digital Innovation Hubs. During 3 full days, each topic will be discussed in depth, bridging challenges for unlocking Digital Transformation potencial such as Artificial Intelligence, Big data, Cybersecurity, Digital Literacy, Skills and Social Inclusion, to solutions, towards the definition of a concrete path for digital transformation.
Digital Transformation Summit 2022 also aims at setting a fruitful networking space, through a set of well planned social events in a unique scene, where policy makers, authorities, industry, researchers and the community of users will get together, discussing opportunities and joining efforts to respond to identified challenges. EC representatives, Commissioners and Members of the European Parliament will participate along the entire summit sharing their institutional points of view and how these relate with the necessary strategic decisions.
Check our list of keynotes and panelists (still growing) which includes government, EC, academia, professionals, and many others, etc. Also, a wide set of EU projects are going to present their results in the different areas and each day will include a very good set of social events where everyone can socialise, stimulate further networking and enjoy the wonders of Madeira island.
