On Monday 20th September, together with the Japan Business Council in Europe (JBCE), we had the pleasure of co-hosting the “Democratic Use of AI Standardisation and its Future” workshop, bringing together leading experts from Europe and Japan to discuss one of the most important topics today: AI standardisation.
As AI continues to evolve at an unprecedented pace, it is essential to develop governance frameworks and standards that address key areas such as customisation, situational awareness, privacy, and security. International dialogue and collaboration are becoming extremely important when working with emerging technologies, as they enable us to learn from different perspectives, exchange best practices, and develop more effective and trusted approaches together.
Throughout the workshop, experts shared valuable perspectives on how AI standardisation can support innovation while ensuring trust, safety and overview of the current challenges. Some of the key insights from the discussions included:
- AI conformity assessment will become increasingly important. Establishing common approaches to evaluating AI systems is essential for ensuring safety, transparency, and accountability.
- Personal AI agents are becoming part of everyday life. Just as smartphones transformed how we interact with technology, personal AI agents may soon become commonplace, making robust standards around privacy, security, customisation, and situational awareness more important than ever.
- AI governance must evolve alongside increasingly networked AI agents. As AI systems interact with one another, governance frameworks will need to address new levels of complexity and responsibility.
- AI is already transforming industry. From manufacturing to energy-efficient data centres, organisations are developing AI-powered solutions that demonstrate the technology’s potential when combined with domain expertise.
