A webinar presenting survey results on the opportunities and challenges of the Cloud-Edge-IoT (CEI) Continuum for the manufacturing industry
AIOTI WG Manufacturing organised a webinar on 25 November to present the survey results on the opportunities and challenges of the Cloud-Edge-IoT (CEI) Continuum for the manufacturing industry.
The survey aimed to explore the opportunities and challenges the Cloud-Edge-IoT (CEI) Continuum brings to the manufacturing industry. With the growing adoption of advanced technologies in manufacturing, there is a clear shift towards enhancing efficiency, sustainability, and human-centric processes. We have identified two main industrial scenarios where the adoption of CEI technologies is expected to benefit the manufacturing industry:
- A current Industry 4.0 scenario articulated in Smart Factory Automation, Smart Product Lifecycle and Smart Supply Chain reference processes and
- A more advanced Industry 5.0 scenario focussing on Human Centricity, Resilience and Sustainability (Circular) reference processes
For both scenarios, an online survey was prepared and this interactive webinar was where Smart Manufacturing stakeholders could express their opinions about opportunities and challenges for CEI technologies adoption in Industry 4.0 and Industry 5.0 scenarios.
The webinar presentation can be found here and recording here.
SCoDIHNet monthly news
The update of the SCoDIHNet platform catalogue.
DIH uses technology platforms (IoT, 5G, Cloud, …) to develop services for end users. A catalogue of platforms was developed a few years ago; it is time to update it. Today, the catalogue encompasses 20 platforms. Some may not be used anymore, and some new ones have appeared. A survey has been launched until the end of the year to provide an up-to-date version with useful information, allowing DIH to use it.
We are Starting a discussion with the Techfinder.io project to cooperate on replicability.
Techfinder.io is implementing a specific platform that encompasses several use cases/solutions developed by European projects in the manufacturing domain. The idea is to share best practices and identify gaps and complementarities.
Initiation of a new paper giving a status of the implementation of the SCoDIHNet services.
A living document has been initiated to provide an updated status of the actions taken to fulfil the SCoDIHNet action plan. It will be updated from time to time. This document is available on both platforms Collabwith and DIHIWARE and also on the Box repository
Finalisation of the organisation of the SNS-ICE/SCoDIHNet webinar and podcast.
As mentioned in the previous News, the webinar “How DIHs could better cooperate with technology providers?” will take place on Monday, December 2nd, at 12h00. The web page is already available for registration using this link.
The podcast How SNS Project Results Can Contribute to the Digitalisation of the European Industry? will be recorded in mid-December and will be available on SNS platforms and the Collabwith platform before the end of the year.

IoT, Edge Computing and AI supporting sustainable health systems in Europe
AIOTI WG Health published the paper IoT, Edge Computing and AI supporting sustainable health systems in Europe.
This paper examines the roles and integration of the Internet of Things (IoT), Edge Computing, and Artificial Intelligence (AI) within European healthcare systems, aiming for enhanced sustainability and improved health outcomes. It is structured around a series of analytical and informational objectives designed to provide a substantive overview of the current landscape, opportunities, and challenges associated with these technologies in healthcare.
The objectives are centred around the current status of technology and standards while showcasing studies and addressing challenges related to future applications.
This paper dives into an in-depth analysis of IoT, Edge Computing, and AI technologies, focusing on their applications in healthcare. The objective is to clarify these technologies’ functionalities, benefits, and potential for innovation within Europe while reviewing the existing state of healthcare systems in Europe concerning IoT, Edge Computing, and AI. This includes evaluating infrastructures, policies, and ongoing initiatives influencing technology adoption in healthcare environments. The paper aims to encourage a concerted effort among stakeholders in European healthcare to embrace technology-driven solutions for achieving long-term sustainability and addressing the evolving health demands of the population.
Selected case studies from Europe will be highlighted to demonstrate the effective use of these technologies in healthcare, emphasising successful integration strategies and the observed benefits on system sustainability and patient care. Alongside the success stories, obstacles will be identified to adopting IoT, Edge Computing, and AI in healthcare, covering technical and infrastructural issues, regulatory concerns, and data privacy and ethical implications. Thus, the paper will outline potential future developments in healthcare influenced by these technologies, focusing on anticipated trends, innovations, and the importance of collaborative efforts in advancing healthcare sustainability.
Finally, the paper presents recommendations for policymakers, healthcare entities, and technology developers to facilitate technology adoption, address identified barriers, and promote innovation within healthcare systems. This white paper is intended as a resource for stakeholders across the healthcare and technology sectors, offering a comprehensive examination of the intersection between IoT, Edge Computing, AI, and healthcare sustainability. It aims to provide a detailed, objective, and pragmatic overview to guide future initiatives and policy-making in the European healthcare landscape.
AI in Energy
AIOTI WG Energy published a paper AI in Energy.
The rapid integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI), 5G, and upcoming 6G technologies into the energy sector signifies a transformative and long-term transitional shift towards a more sustainable and efficient future enabled by myriads of digital technologies.
This paper focuses on the potential and challenges of leveraging AI across various segments of the energy landscape and stakeholders, including generation, distribution, and consumption within smart grids. Through comprehensive and dynamically evolving digital infrastructures the advanced data analytics, real-time monitoring, and predictive modelling, AI enhances the flexibility, reliability, and efficiency of energy systems. The convergence of AI and 6G technologies is particularly critical in optimising the performance of renewable energy sources, rolling out smart grid solutions to ensure grid stability, and fostering a resilient energy ecosystem.
Key insights from this paper highlight the rapidly evolving role of AI in driving energy innovations, addressing challenges and policy and standardisation aspects, the ethical and cybersecurity considerations that accompany the deployment of AI solutions and technologies. The system and digital technologies stakeholders are embracing the full potential of AI to create a cleaner, smarter, and more resilient energy.
